![]() For example, the different bonuses for each tech track make them feel more thematically integrated than TM's cult tracks, but also mean that certain factions will always want to focus on certain tech tracks, reducing the competition for the other tracks. Personally, I like some of the additional systems in GP, but I can see Pjoernrachzarck's point. Also, I haven't played GP in a while, but IIRC its economy is a bit looser than TM's it's a bit easier to get the money you need (which may be fun or unfun depending on the player, but does reduce the competition for the limited sources of coins). In GP you can grab a planet they wanted, but they can usually fly around you to reach others. Therefore, there are more strategically important spaces where you can block off your opponents' expansion. It's mostly land with few rivers, as opposed to GP which is mostly space with few planets. I'm not the person you're asking, but as I see it, the main reason TM feels more competitive is because of the map. Just make sure to watch that video I linked above before you start as it will make things so much clearer. If you are umming and ahhing over whether to try this game, and you like heavy but highly replayable Euros with a competitive element, then I really recommend giving this game a try. All in all this is a damn phenomenal game that had me thinking about it long after I played and I really want to "git gud" (or at least not be terrible) over the coming months. I have yet to play the game 2-player but I would like to try it and see if that also works well. Also, do not neglect the research tracks, they give a ton of points at the end when you cross the Level 3 barriers. This happened to me, after a strong start in the initial first few turns. What is surprising is how damn tight this game feels, you only have 6 rounds to do everything you need and the risk is that if you don't build up your engine and/or make smart choices that lead to having enough resources to play with leading up to the end of the game, that your last turn is a dud. Our initial playthrough took around 5 hours as we had some AP and we were constantly checking rules, but then this weekend we played a 3 player game and it flowed much quicker due to our familiarity with the game. I am pretty sure this game can be played for years and not get boring. The amount of variability and replayability this game has is insane, there are varying end-game scoring conditions, varying research tiles, and that before getting to the 14 asymmetrical races which often do play very different in how you approach the game, whether it be different resource value or usage or even in the way their federations work. Gaia Project is an improvement not only in this regard with its new Research Track, but also in every other respect I can think of. I played Terra Mystica (the forebearer with a fantasy theme that this sci-fi remake of that game is based on) once and while I thought it was "ok", I remember not liking the cult track. After having a mild brain overload getting my head around the rules (helped greatly by this 1 hour video from Meeple University which I now consider a must-watch for any first-time plaxer ) we started the game at a slow and thorough pace to make sure we didn't miss too much. Last week I decided to get it out and my group had our first 4 player game. It's a very highly rated heavy Euro and currently the 7th most highly ranked game on BGG ![]() I have had Gaia Project for over a year but hadn't played it yet. r/tabletopgamedesign - Designer's subreddit.r/boardgameexchange - selling/buying/trading games.Game of the Week Calendar Related Sites & Subreddits The simplest use is to bold game names in your comment and add " /u/r2d8 getinfo" at the end of the post, but this post/sub has other features identified.
